Bill Kazmaier

Bill was a powerlifter and strongman who thoroughly dominated the strength scene in the 1980s.

Bill decided to leave school and become the top powerlifter in the world. He achieved this in short order. By 1979, at the young age of 25 years old, he did so winning the American powerlifting championships and the IPF world championship that year in the superheavyweight class.

He was the first human to bench press over 300 kg. or 660 pounds. He held the world record bench at 661 pounds for a long time. He was the first man to lift all five McGlashen Stones in competition. He remains the only man to lift the Thomas Inch Dumbell overhead. He could cheat curl 315 pounds for fifteen reps. He still has the IPF and USPF Senior American record total in powerlifting (1100 kg. or 2420 lbs.). He set this in 1981 in Columbus, Georgia. He was an IPF champion twice in 1979 and 1983. In the 1978 national championships in the 125+ kg class in Dayton, Ohio, he squatted 865 lbs. He benched 622 pounds. He deadlifted 804 pounds. This gave him a total of 2292 pounds. In 1983 when he won again in Gothenberg, Sweden in the 125+ kg. weight class. He squatted 848 pounds. He benched 501 pounds with a severe pec injury. He deadlifted 799 pounds. This gave a total of 2149.

He also competed in the World's Strongest Man Contests. He competed in six of them. In 1979, he came in third. From 1980 until 1982, he won the competitions handsomely. He was the first man to win the WSM title three times in a row. In 1981, he tore his pec while bending cold rolled steel bars in the WSM. This makes his 1983 IPF championship all that much more significant. After this tear, he lost more than one-hundred pounds off his bench.

After launching successful business ventures and reflecting on his own life, Bill came to understand just how important guidance is for America's Youth. "Leaving communities better than he found them" became his life's passion .

Ed Coan

Ed Coan widely regarded throughout the powerlifting world as the greatest powerlifter of all time.

Throughout his active career in international powerlifting competition Ed Coan has set over 71 world records in powerlifting. He became the lightest person to cross the 2,400 lb. barrier in the powerlifting total (a sum of three lifts: the deadlift, bench, and squat). He set an all-time powerlifting record total at 2,463 pounds, even though at the time he was not in the heaviest weight class.
Ed is still acknowledged and regarded as a legend in powerlifting and spends much of his time mentoring young lifters coming into the sport.

Dr. Eric Serrano

Dr. Eric Serrano MD is the ace sought out by elite athletes around the world for help with the most difficult of problems. Dr. Serrano spends a large part of his time promoting the health of his every day family practice patients. Amongst the thousands of patients are elite athletes from around the globe who will travel to the ends of the earth to consult with him. A wide array of athletes from the NFL, NHL, MLB in addition to countless elite amateurs make up Eric’s elite client list of athletes. His cohesive expertise comes from years of practicing medicine and his career as record-breaking power-lifter. As an athlete and family man Eric understands the needs of his clients and pushes himself to stay on the cutting edge of training, supplementation, nutrition, injury rehabilitation and performance enhancement.

Dr. Serrano is a graduate of Kansas State University and earned his medical degree for Kansas University. One will never have an idea of what extreme demand exists for Dr. Serrano’s services, which is obvious by viewing a message log full of inquiries from elite athletes, strength coaches and related practitioners around the world. He is truly the expert of experts, the one the elite come to for guidance and information. Dr. Serrano has also formulated numerous nutritional supplements for some of the leading nutritional companies on the market. Dr. Stefi Cohen

Dr. Stefi Cohen CSCS, Nutrition Coach, DPT
Stefi has an extensive list of achievements in the athletic field but she is also very well accomplished in the academic field. Not only is Stefi a multiple world record holding powerlifter, she is also an exercise physiologist and doctor of physical therapy.

In Olympic Weightlifting Stefi was the Florida senior state gold medalist (2015). Illinois senior state gold medalist and record holder (2015). In Powerlifting, Stefi is the current all-time world record holder in squat, deadlift and total, she has 25 total all time world records so far in her career and is the #1 123lb Powerlifter in the world. Prior to strength sports, Stefi was an accomplished NCAA (D1) Soccer Player for San Diego State 2009-10, she was also a member of the U17 Venezuelan National Soccer Team 2006-09. Stefi is also a pro boxer and owner of hybrid performance.

Justin Harris

Justin Harris is the owner of the customized training and performance nutrition company Troponin Nutrition.

He holds a Master’s degree in Atomic Physics with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology.  

As a top-level competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter, Justin was the overall winner of the 2004 Mr. Michigan, Superheavyweight champion for the 2006 Jr. USAs, and the 2007 & 2008 APF Michigan powerlifting champion, totaling “Elite” in both competitions. 

An expert in performance nutrition, Justin has written articles and given seminars around the country on the science of human physiology. 

Victoria Felkar

Dr. David Leaf

Dr. Leaf has been at every single SWIS Symposium since 1999. He is always a large hit with his great insights into why injuries occur and the best treatment and rehab protocol to use. His presentation will be "Advanced Upper Body Muscle Testing". Dr. Leaf is always on the cutting edge of new and innovative ways to test and treat. This will be an incredible presentation to be in as he usually turns it into a workshop and case studies.
 

Dr. Leaf is a chiropractor and has been in practice for over 30 years. He was the past president of the International College Applied Kinesiology and has lectured in United States, Canada, Europe, Australia on the application of muscle testing for different disorders. He has treated Olympic athletes, world champions and professional players in the NFL, NBA and NHL and was on the medical staff of A.C. Milan of the Italian soccer league. He is one of the best integrated practitioners and muscle testers in the country utilizing a highly innovative treatment combination consisting of structural and chemical protocols to fix complicated disorders.

Matt Nichol

Matt Nichol has been coaching professional and Olympic athletes for 24 years and is recognized as one of the preeminent authorities in the world of sports performance. Matt has worked in the NFL and NHL and currently acts as a consultant for a number of professional athletes, teams and organizations with a specific interest in maximizing athletic performance by maximizing human health.

Outside of his work in athletics, Matt has founded, directed, and partnered with several innovative companies. Most notably, be was the founder and the product formulator at BioSteel Sports Nutrition, a manufacturer and distributor of sports drinks and nutritional supplements. During his tenure with the company, he helped BioSteel grow from a start-up with a shoestring budget to a multi-million dollar business with global distribution.

Matt received his Bachelor of Concurrent Education from McGill University in Montreal, completing a double major in Physical Education and History and his Masters of Kinesiology and Masters of Coaching from York University in Toronto.

Eoin Lacey

Eoin has always been one of the best presenters where he can take complicated concepts and make it understandable and practical...and also make you laugh while you learn.

Eoin has been working within the irish training, nutrition and fitness industry for over 19 years. Throughout that time he has been the first Irish certified Sports Nutritionist from the International Society of Sports Nutrition which he is also the Irish Ambassador. He is the first Irish graduate of the Institute of Functional Medicine and the first graduate of the Australian College of Nutrition and Environmental Medicine. Eoin is the co founder of the Irish Strength Institute, there is currently 4 Dublin based centres and 2 in Portugal. He also lectures internationally on training and nutrition.

Brian Carroll

Brian is a world-class powerlifter with over two decades of world class powerlifting under his belt. Coming back from a devastating back injury in 2012 that broke multiple bones and that most experts said he would never recover from, he has returned to the pinnacle of world-class lifting (while 100% pain and symptom-free) and is now dedicated to helping others avoid the same mistakes that he made in the past through private and group coaching.

Brian’s impressive recovery has given him the opportunity to teach and deliver talks to physical therapists, chiropractors, medical doctors, professional strength & conditioning coaches and experts from all facets of sport, on how to avoid injury, while building anti-fragile strength and resilience in athletes.

Rick Collins, JD, FISSN, CSCS
Rick Collins, Esq., is a lawyer dedicated to the health and fitness community. His law firm represents numerous companies in the sports nutrition industry as well as amateur and professional athletes. He is internationally recognized as a legal authority in the field of dietary supplements and performance-enhancing substances. He has served as Legal Counsel to the International Society of Sports Nutrition since its formation, and is also the official legal advisor to the International Federation of BodyBuilders. He has contributed chapters to two textbooks on sports nutrition, is a frequent contributor to various health and fitness publications, and writes a monthly column for the nationally circulated Muscular Development magazine. Rick was interviewed as a legal authority in the film “Bigger, Stronger, Faster*” (2008) and has appeared on national television talk and news shows and radio programs. He is also a nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA-CSCS) and former personal trainer and competitive bodybuilder. Christian Thibaudeau

Christian Thibaudeau has been involved in the business of training for over the last 15 years. During this period, he worked with athletes from 27 different sports. He has been "Head Strength Coach" for the Central Institute for Human Performance (official center of the St. Louis Blues).

His specialty: being a generalist. He assists his athletes to develop the necessary qualities to increase their performances (eg: muscle mass, power, explosiveness, coordination). His work method enabled him to lead several successful athletes in a multitude of different disciplines.

Christian is a prolific writer with three books published, each of which translated into three languages (The Black Book of Training Secrets, Theory and Application of Modern Strength and Power Methods, High Threshold Muscle Building). In addition, Christian is co-author with Paul Carter in a new book, which will soon be released. He is also the author of two DVDs (Cluster Training, Mechanical Drop Sets).

Christian is also a senior author and head writer for the E-Magazine T-Nation his articles are read by over 200,000 people every week.

He competed in weightlifting at the national level as well as bodybuilding, He was also a football coach for 8 years.

Dr. Dani Lamartina

Dani is a world-ranked powerlifter, Duke University DPT alum, coach, and EliteFTS columnist. She knows what it means to get stronger, get injured, get weaker, and come back stronger yet again.

Dani begin clinical work at age 15, and throughout her career she’s seen the gamut of PT - the good and the bad. While her experience and skill set uniquely qualifies her to work with strength athletes, her goal has - and always will be - to dignify and take care of people from all walks of life.

Throughout her career she’s also learned that most of us have something that sets our souls on fire. For her and Dave, this is strength sports and bodybuilding. She knows all too well that when you can’t do the thing you love, the loss is far more than physical. Whatever it is you do, Dani wants to help you get back to it - better, stronger, and more prepared for the road ahead.

Donnie Thompson

Donnie was such a hit at SWIS 2015 that we had to have him come back to share his knowledge on how he works with low back injuries due to weight training. He is going to show some new protocols he has just developed and wants to share. Now this is exciting. Read his impressive bio below.

Donnie Thompson owns Performance Therapy for Strength Athletes, Super D Performance Tours and Part Owner of The Compound.

Donnie Thompson also worked for 6 yearsat Progressive Sports Physical Therapy in West Columbia, South Carolina where he was the Strength and Mobility Director for 21 clinics statewide.
Donnie started competitive Powerlifting in 1998 and has not turned back. Donnie is the first human to ever total 3000 lbs.!
Donnie earned 8-all time World Records in Professional Powerlifting including; 3 BenchPress records, 2 Squat records (1260) and 3 Total records!His 3000 lb. Powerlifting total stood until August of 2013.

Pavel, Kelly Starrett, Dick Hartzell and Louie Simmons have worked with Donnie personally over the past two decades. This led to his SHW victory at the 2005 Arnold Classic WPO Powerlifting Championships and 3 all-time totals in 2008 and 2011. 2850lbs, 2905lbs and 3000lbs respectively!

Dr. Mike Israetel

Cofounder of Renaissance Periodization, Dr. Mike Israetel​ holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University.

Currently a professor in the strength and hypertrophy masters program at Lehman College, Mike has taught several courses at multiple universities, including Nutrition for Public Health, Advanced Sports Nutrition and Exercise, and Nutrition and Behavior.

Originally from Moscow, Russia, he has worked as a consultant on sports nutrition to the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Johnson City, TN, and has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific and performance/health conferences worldwide, including nutritional seminars at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Mike has coached numerous athletes and busy professionals in both diet and weight training, and is himself a competitive bodybuilder and professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappler.

Mai-Linh Dovan

Mai-Linh Dovan is a Certified Athletic Therapist and leading industry expert in functional rehabilitation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Therapy and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Concordia University, where she worked in collaboration with the Department of Psychology and the Centre for Research in Human Development. She uses this approach with a diversity of athletes and clients from bodybuilders, powerlifters, CrossFit athletes, as well as athletes from many sports and recreational lifters struggling with various problems: recovery from cervical and thoracic fractures, low back and shoulder dysfunction, dysfunctional movement patterns. It has led many to unleash their full performance potential.

Mai-Linh is also the founder of Rehab-U | Movement and Performance Therapy, an online platform for innovative movement optimization and (p)rehabilitation tools and services for athletes and active individuals. The platform also serves as a resource for personal trainers, strength coaches, and fitness professionals.

It is using this innovative approach rooted in clinical strategies and geared towards prevention and performance, that Mai-Linh developed the Movement Optimization for Prehab and Performance Course. This course provides the principles to effectively assess and identify movement dysfunction as well as strategies, means and methods to build a rehabilitation- integrated intervention.

Mai-Linh Dovan

Mai-Linh Dovan is a Certified Athletic Therapist and leading industry expert in functional rehabilitation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Therapy and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Concordia University, where she worked in collaboration with the Department of Psychology and the Centre for Research in Human Development.
